Review: The Dream Slayer

Happy Thursday! Today is a review and spotlight of The Dream Slayer by Jill Cooper. Enjoy!

Review:

The Dream Slayer is a story of a normal girl being thrown into battles with the strongest demons imaginable. Imagine, for a moment, that you have a dream about a person you're scared of dying, and then it happens. This is what happened to Natalie.

Natalie is a young girl, struggling through high school with bullies. She's had strange dreams involving a different form of herself being a demon slayer, but suddenly the dreams begin to infiltrate her life. The author took the traditional idea of a doppelganger and flipped it on its side. I really enjoyed this novel, and I recommend it.

BLURB:

In the young adult teen series Dream Slayer, Natalie Johnson has always dreamed she’s someone else; calm, beautiful, in control. A chosen warrior with a maniacal arch nemesis and a dreamy boyfriend, the type that can make your knees melt and your heart quiver.

Real life is much different. She’s tormented by a bully and endures the sharp tongue of her father, but finds solace in her dreams.

When her bully ends up dead, de ja vu from a dream hits her hard as everything around her begins to fall apart. Whatever killed Sarah in her dreams is now in reality, hunting her from the shadows. And it wants her dead.

Somehow as the lines between reality and nightmare blur, Natalie must discover hidden strength to pull her friends and family back from the brink of madness.

Excerpt:

Sarah stayed, bending down to Natalie’s head. “You’re disgusting.” The look of hate on Sarah’s face was palpable. “You’re useless. If you think this is bad, just wait till you see what’s going to happen tomorrow.”

“Just… leave me alone.” Natalie’s hushed voice was barely a whisper, but inside she was pleading for her life.

Sarah snorted. What should have been a pretty face was twisted and cruel. “You think you can stop me?”

Natalie knew she couldn’t. She just knew.

“God damn it,” the bus driver yelled, his heavy footsteps advancing. “McDonald, what the hell do you think you’re up to?” He reached down and yanked on the girl’s sweater, forcing her up.

“Hey!” Sarah pushed his hands away but was unable to get his girth to move. “Do you know who my parents are? Get off me, jerk.”

“You hit her? You think it will matter if you hit her?”

Sarah rolled her eyes. “Please, like I had to touch her. She’s a klutz.” Sarah’s eyes looked down at Natalie. “Right?”

She tried to sit up, but her limbs shook like she’d been hit by a runaway freight train. “Right,” Natalie’s voice cracked. “I’m okay. Sarah was just trying to… help me.”

“That’s your story? That’s what you really want to tell me?” His voice was angry, and Natalie shook all over again. She wanted to hide… to fade away.

I love journals but mostly do my writing on my computer. How about you, are you still using a paper notebook for notes or writing stories down?

Hi Shannon,

It's my husband's fix it upper car. He's had a 1960 car since he was a teen, and since we have been married.

It used to be his daily driver, but once we had a baby he got something more reliable.

Hi Gala,

I am 95% strictly a computer writer. I don't like really writing on paper unless it can't be avoided.

If I have to go somewhere and I really need to get something down, I will use a journal.

Great question!

Love the review and the excerpt! Do you have a favorite author whom you admire?

Hi Jibriel!

I have quite a few I admire. Some of them are oldies: Stephen King for his characters, scares, and suspense. I love how he could write a grocery list and it would be gripping.

Joyce Carol Oates for her ability to rip your heart out whether you like her characters or not. For the raw, no apologizes emotion.

Ann Rice, for making vampires so interesting and sometimes human.
