Spotlight: Tabitha Rayne

Happy Monday! Today, I'm spotlighting Tabitha Rayne, author of A Clockwork Butterfly. Enjoy!

It’s lovely to be here today Lindsay, thank you for letting me stop by!

Food Glorious Food!

Food, food, food! I love food, my mouth is watering just typing the word! I had always dreamed of how wonderful beef Wellington would be, so much so, that I would deny myself it if it was ever on the menu at a restaurant just in case it didn't match up to my vision of what it would taste like. Recently though, one of my friend's who is a magnificent chef, made some and I'm telling you, it was better than I ever imagined. Because I made my future world where A Clockwork Butterfly is set, fairly austere, good food becomes a rare and coveted treat for my heroine, Lena. In one chapter, she is given a feast of all the mouth watering delicacies you can think of and because she has basically lived off gruel most of her life, it is an overwhelming sensual treat. I had great fun writing that scene, imagining all the flavours and textures, mmmm salmon, perfect strawberries, - and the best bit? I simply had to do some research on some chocolate ice cream!

Angelo, a clockwork butterfly maker, is held captive, his essence harvested daily by Lena. Over time, the couple begins to fall in love, something which is strictly prohibited. When their forbidden love is discovered, Lena is banished from the manor.

A little taster…
“You must be hungry,” The Wasp stated and guided Lena unsteadily over the thick rug.
Lena remembered how rich and ornate it had looked and took the opportunity to wriggle her bare toes about in it as she walked. She tried to brand the memory into her feet so she could revisit this place while she paced the cold concrete of her cell at night. She shivered slightly and at once a cloak was draped around her shoulders and clipped together at her throat. They stopped and Lena was told to sit while Cheryl removed her blindfold. Before her lay the most sumptuous feast she had only ever seen in fairytales. For a punishment, Lena thought to herself, this wasn’t bad. Not bad at all.

The Wasp sat at the other end of the table and could only just be seen over the mountains of beautiful fresh delicacies and candelabras.

“Champagne?” The Wasp cocked her head to Cheryl who placed a glass of bubbly liquid in front of Lena.

“Thank you.” She smiled at the young woman and noticed she had changed into what looked like an old fashioned waitress or maid’s outfit. Cheryl looked away and bowed slightly to The Wasp. Lena felt a very strange atmosphere grow between the women and sensed that she should just keep her attention on her plate which was now being piled high with all sorts of delicious looking morsels. Salmon, broccoli, cheese, plums, grapes, bread, and things Lena couldn’t even name.

She picked up her fork and paused, waiting for a command to eat from The Wasp. She nodded once, staring, and Lena speared the salmon and ravenously piled it into her mouth. Everything was incredible. Lena was in heaven. The manor’s food had been on a par with the gruel thrust through her cell door in the mornings and Lena savored every lick of this bounty. She glanced up at The Wasp and Cheryl who were motionless, staring at her. Lena didn’t know whether to feel intimidated or amused so just kept stuffing her face and chewing until her jaws and stomach ached. She half anticipated another round of punishment of some sort and wanted to make sure that she took full advantage of her host’s hospitality just in case she was never brought back to this table.
